It appears Glock has turned towards the DTM driving for old F1 outfit BMW (ESPN). For those who are unaware, the DTM is the German version of touring cars and has had a number of former F1 stars such as David Coulthard and Ralf Schumacher.
I will personally miss him but since I have access to the DTM I am still excited to see him race and I'd like to wish him the best of luck!
"Had 3 great years... We part in friendship" Timo Glock to Sport Bild
It has now been confirmed that Timo Glock has departed from Marussia which surely means he has now left Formula 1 with only seats remaining at Caterham and Force India.
The story from Sport Bild first circulated among Twitter last night creating mass speculation.
(The article is in German so I recommend a good translator)
Confirmed on the Marussia F1 Team website, the team and Glock released a joint statemeant, parting ways by "mutual consent." As I said before in the Haug story, does mutual consent mean jumped before you're pushed?
I'm actually quite disappointed. At a time when we should all be getting excited for the new season to get under way at testing, we were now speculating at who would get the two vacant seats (Caterham and Force India)! Both teams said it wasn't a decision they were taking lightly, but there's a difference between taking your time, and not caring completely.
I don't agree with it taking this long, I also can't remember the last time this ever took so long. When the teams are handing over their entry forms and fees they should be made to have a driver line-up settled and agreed with. Now that Marussia have joined the fray, the situation has gotten worse.
This is only because I really enjoy knowing who's driving next season, it's probably not a big deal. What is a big deal is that drivers like Glock, or maybe a better example of Heikki Kovalainen are being forced out by cash cows. Like Barichello for Senna, Kovalainen looks set to lose his place at Caterham for better funded Vitaly Petrov.
The reason (supposedly) behind this is that it will generate better funding for the team to develop the car. That's all well and good, but if you haven't got a decent driver who can take advantage of the car, then you will not score points. Get the talent in first and the money will come in.
Glock's absence leaves three seats open and with weeks until testing is about to begin, they would need to get someone in who can lead rookie Max Chilton and team if they look to overhaul Caterham in the race for the first point.
Marussia go on to point out "we will provide an update regarding the completion of our driver line-up in due course." This is more than we've got from Caterham or Force India, and could this mean the departure has been in the pipe line for a while? All I know is, they should really #HireHeikki asap! (Get that trending on Twitter!)
